Role Of Boiler Water Level Indicator

The boiler water level indicator makes sure that the tubes have enough water to cool them while making steam. If not, the flames could heat the tubes too much, softening it and allowing it to burst due to pressure.

In this article, we will discuss the construction and application of boiler water level indicator .

Construction:

  • Two water level indicators are usually installed into the boiler. These indicators are located at the boiler's front side.

  • Three taps are used to indicate water level: steam cock (water cock), drain cock (drain cock) and glass tube (glass tube).

  • The steam cock connects and disconnects the glass tube from steam space.

  • The watercock connects and disconnects the glass tube from the boiler.

  • To ensure clear operation of the steam and watercock, the drain cock is used at regular intervals to drain the water from the tube.

  • A cover is made specifically for the protection of the glass tube.

Working Principle:

  • Steam rushed out of the upper passage, while water rushed down from the lower passage towards the glass tube.

  • This is the indicator of the water level in the boiler. Two balls are placed at the junction between a tube of metal. The balls can be kept in their normal place. Full line circle if the glass tube breaks. Steam rushes from the upper passage and water flows from the lower passage because of the pressure difference between the boiler pressure and atmospheric pressure. The balls are transported along the passage between glass tubes and closed passages.

  • The fig shows the position of the ball in a dotted circle. This prevents steam and water from escaping the boiler.

These are some specifications and functions of the water level indicator and why it is so important for boilers.
