Where to Start When Choosing Assisted Care for an Elderly Relative?

According to the Federation of Assisted Living of America (ALFA), assisted living is "a long-term care option that combines housing, assistance and health care when needed". You can now easily look for the most ideal senior living center for providing your family with independant living.

As the name suggests, assisted living "is intended for people who need assistance in daily activities such as eating, medication or bathing, dressing and transportation". People with dementia, limited mobility, incontinence problems and the like can benefit the most from life support measures.

Life support gives older family members peace of mind that someone is caring for their loved one. However, the adult he cares about may not want someone to look over his shoulder all the time. If your elderly loved one is able to function on their own and is determined to maintain their independence for as long as possible, independent living may be a better option.

ALFA defines independent living as a situation "intended for older people who need little or no help with their daily activities". However, this does not mean that independent guests are completely alone.

You will continue to be provided with all the amenities that facilities for independent living provide, including housekeeping, food and laundry. Often they are also provided with access and, if necessary, transportation to health services.
